Taiwan Paper Ind. Association Files Anti-dumping Charges

Taipei, July 14, 2011 (CENS)--The Taiwan Paper Industry Association recently filed anti-dumping charges with the Ministry of Finance to look into imported coated paper from China, Japan, South Korea and Finland, with the move pleasing leading paper manufacturers as Yuen Fonog Yu Paper Mfg. Co. and Cheng Loong Corp.

The association hopes the MOF will slap 93%, 88%, 14% and 4% anti-dumping taxes on coated paper from China, Japan, South Korea and Finland, respectively, saying the proposed anti-dumping tariffs will ensure sound, steady development of the domestic paper-making industry.

K.S. Chen, secretary general of the Taiwan Paper Industry Association, said the domestic print or publishing paper market is facing underselling from foreign producers who dump on Taiwan coated papers, which are used in magazines, direct-marketing materials and labeling.

Taiwan Paper Industry Association statistics show Taiwan consumed 326,400 metric tons of coated paper last year, 60% of which or 199,000 metric tons being imported.

Imported coated paper is US$860 per metric ton, compared to US$980 for domestic products.

Chen complains that domestic papermakers pay 5% commodity tax when exporting versus none for importers after Taiwan entered the World Trade Organization, hence making survival tough for local manufacturers.
